G7 Summit in Évian: Security Measures and Escalating Protests Shape the Opening

Évian-les-Bains – 15.06.2026: The summit of the Group of Seven (G7), which started today in Évian-les-Bains in southeastern France, is drawing global attention. The heads of state and government of the most influential industrialized nations will discuss, until June 17, primarily support for Ukraine in the war, the situation in the Middle East, as well as the challenges of a sustainable and just global economy.

Due to worldwide political tensions and possible security threats, extensive security measures have been implemented. Approximately 16,000 security personnel are deployed. This includes 10,000 police officers primarily responsible for investigations, crime prevention, and public protection. The deployment is supplemented by around 1,000 military personnel, mainly from the French Air and Space Forces. These precautions are modeled after the high security standards already applied during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Only a few kilometers away, massive protests against the G7 Summit took place on June 14 in Geneva, Switzerland. Thousands of demonstrators from various groups—including environmental activists, women’s rights movements, and representatives of the anti-capitalism scene—began peacefully. However, the situation escalated when about 600 violent members of the so-called “Black Bloc” set cars on fire and destroyed storefronts as well as offices of the United Nations. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons.

In response to the riots, authorities in both Switzerland and France tightened security measures. Border crossings were controlled and partially closed. Overall, more than 13,000 French security forces are on duty in the border region. Public life in Geneva was severely restricted; numerous shops remained closed, and residents were urged to avoid gatherings.

Despite these incidents, the G7 Summit remains an important forum for multilateral discussions. Participating countries are working to find joint solutions for international conflicts, economic inequalities, and technological developments—such as in the field of artificial intelligence. The assembly faces the challenge of formulating unified strategies amid increasing global tensions.

The international community is closely watching the progress of the summit, not least because of the parallel protests that illustrate the broad spectrum of worldwide criticism of the influence and decision-making processes of the industrialized nations. The outcome of the meeting could be decisive for the further development of international cooperation in a world marked by uncertainties.

The coming days will be crucial to demonstrate how flexible and effective the G7 countries can respond to the complex challenges to promote stability and justice on a global scale.
