Paris – 01.06.2026: Following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) triumphant victory in the Champions League on May 30, 2026, serious riots erupted in Paris and numerous other French cities. Nationwide, over 890 people were arrested, marking a 45 percent increase compared to the previous year. Riots were reported in 71 cities, with 15 locations experiencing looting. Paris was especially hard hit, where around 20,000 people celebrated on the Champs-Élysées and in the Parc des Princes. Cities such as Strasbourg and Grenoble also became scenes of violent assaults.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had announced an “exceptional” security system before the match, deploying a total of 22,000 officers, including 8,000 in Paris alone. This measure aimed to counter the anticipated enthusiasm and potential riots. Despite the massive police presence, the serious clashes could not be fully prevented, and 178 police officers and gendarmes were injured.

Nuñez defended the measures, stressing that the police acted decisively against acts of violence. However, he also pointed out that the riots went beyond football fans and were not exclusively committed by PSG supporters. The question of whether there were unnoticed security gaps remains open. The minister stated that the situation was “globally under control” but admitted that the incidents highlighted the challenges of managing large-scale events.

The riots raise broader questions about the effectiveness and organization of security concepts at major sporting events. Despite extensive preparations and an unprecedented police operation, escalation could not be entirely averted. Observers and experts are now calling for a thorough analysis of the incidents to optimize future security plans. The ongoing debate also includes the role of preventive measures and social prevention to reduce violent tendencies among fans.

Affected business owners and residents have also voiced their displeasure over the massive property damage caused by looting and vandalism. Swift court proceedings against suspects were initiated immediately after the riots. The events following the sporting success have increased public pressure on the government and security authorities to better control the situation in the coming weeks and months and significantly reduce future riots.

Overall, despite large-scale security measures and an exceptional police deployment, significant issues occurred in managing the riots. The question of how to more effectively guarantee safety at major events in urban areas remains central.
