Gironde: Organized Aid Relieves Emergency Services After a Week of Wildfire

Bordeaux – 30.07.2026: One week after the severe wildfire broke out in Gironde, civilian aid remains an important part of the crisis response. Volunteers, municipal services and aid organizations are assisting evacuees and allowing emergency personnel on the fire fronts to focus on their work. Authorities are coordinating offers of assistance so that accommodation, food and in-kind donations reach the places where they are needed.

Bordeaux Métropole has set up the Parc des Expositions in Bordeaux-Lac as a central reception point for people who have had to leave their homes or holiday accommodation. Sleeping facilities, rest areas, water, meals and showers are available there. According to the metropolitan authority, the site can accommodate up to 10,000 people. A separate area has also been created for accompanying pets.

Services at the exhibition site are provided by the municipal volunteer reserve, the French Red Cross and participating municipalities. A logistics center coordinates deliveries from companies, municipalities and organizations. The regulated distribution is intended to prevent relief supplies from arriving in an unorganized manner or access routes for emergency vehicles from being blocked. In-kind donations should therefore be handed in through the relevant town halls.

Anyone wishing to volunteer should contact the designated telephone number, an online form or their own municipality, in accordance with Bordeaux Métropole guidelines. The exhibition site itself is reserved exclusively for evacuees. Separating the reception of people seeking shelter from the registration of additional volunteers is intended to ensure safe and orderly operations.

In the forest areas, firefighting remains the responsibility of specialized personnel. The fire near Saumos has been burning since 22 July 2026. Due to the high risk of wildfires, the prefecture had declared the highest alert level for the department. The gendarmerie, fire service and state agencies have received reinforcements in recent days from additional national personnel and technical resources.

The national civil protection administration deployed, among other resources, a converted A400M transport aircraft capable of dropping firefighting agents. Helicopters for water drops were also deployed. Protection Civile reported that several hundred volunteers from 30 departments were supporting affected people with care, supplies and accommodation.

For people from the affected municipalities, announcements by local authorities, the prefecture and incident command remain authoritative. This applies in particular to evacuation orders, road closures and access restrictions. In Bordeaux, organized aid is focused on clearly defined tasks: accommodation, food, hygiene items, animal care and the controlled distribution of incoming donations.
