Gironde: Searching for New Ignition Points Through Nighttime Aerial Reconnaissance

Le Porge – July 29, 2026: The major forest fire in western Gironde is still considered stabilized, but the danger beneath the surface has by no means disappeared. Several fire spots have recently reignited in the affected forest and dune areas. In response, emergency personnel are monitoring wide areas from the air even at night in order to detect embers, smoke, and new flames as early as possible.

On Wednesday, July 29, Franceinfo reported on a reconnaissance operation aboard a military helicopter. Crews fly over the fire area looking for signs of reignition. Their observations enable ground personnel to respond in a targeted manner. On the ground, firefighters secure the perimeter of the fire area, inspect areas that have already been extinguished, and put out spots that have caught fire again due to heat.

According to authorities, 14 such reignitions were recorded on Tuesday alone. All could be dealt with quickly. Describing the fire as stabilized therefore does not mean that it has been completely extinguished. The term primarily describes a situation in which the fire is no longer spreading. However, embers may remain beneath forest soil, roots, and charred plant remains. Wind, dry weather, and rising temperatures can fuel them again.

Nighttime reconnaissance is particularly important because of the size of the area and the complex terrain. Between forest zones, dunes, and difficult-to-access sections, faint columns of smoke or small flames cannot always be immediately detected everywhere from the ground. From the air, suspicious locations can be identified and reported to the incident command post. Helicopters thus complement the firefighters’ close monitoring, but do not replace firefighting operations or securing the fire perimeter.

Considerable personnel are still deployed in the operation. According to the National Gendarmerie, more than 1,200 gendarmes have been deployed in Gironde and the neighboring Landes department. Their tasks range from setting up control lines and managing traffic to protecting evacuation areas. The prefecture is also continuing to monitor developments, while emergency personnel remain prepared for possible new fire spots.

For residents of municipalities in the affected area, stabilization is therefore only a sign of cautious relief. As long as embers remain underground and some spots reignite, inspections and rapid firefighting operations will continue to be necessary. The 14 fire spots identified on Tuesday show why the area must continue to be monitored day and night, despite the fire front being contained.
