Government extends summer sales in France to July 28 due to heat

Paris – 01.07.2026: The French government is extending the 2026 summer sales in most departments by one week until July 28. Serge Papin, Minister for Small Businesses, Trade, Crafts, Tourism and Purchasing Power, announced this on June 30 in a TV interview. The move is justified by a heatwave that has in many places significantly reduced customer footfall in city centers and shopping malls. According to the ministry, the additional week should give retailers leeway to reduce inventories and make price promotions visible.

The decision is part of a series of short-term interventions with which Paris adapts seasonal sales periods to exceptional circumstances. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had already hinted at an extension without naming a date. With the now fixed end date the government provides planning certainty for chains and small shop owners. A corresponding update of the official schedule was published by the Ministry of Economy on June 30 on its website; there the shift from July 21 to July 28 is noted. As usual, Corsica is subject to different rules.

Trade associations reported noticeable declines in pedestrian flows and receipts in recent days. They point out that on hot afternoons spontaneous visits to brick-and-mortar stores become rarer while online orders increase. The extension is therefore seen as a pragmatic offset, but according to industry representatives it does not replace structural support. Small fashion and shoe shops in particular suffer from fixed costs and delayed season changes; they are additionally calling for more flexible clearance periods and relief on energy and air-conditioning costs.

For consumers the main change is the time horizon: discounts and remaining stock will be available for longer, and the legal rules on warranty and exchanges in the context of the sales remain unchanged. Retailers can use the extra week to consolidate size runs and reduce inventories over several discount levels. Municipalities and shopping centers are in some cases announcing extended evening opening hours when temperatures fall and customer traffic picks up.

Minister Papin did not rule out a further extension if the extreme heat intensifies again by the end of July. This keeps the government room for another adjustment open. At the same time the debate highlights a growing weather-dependence of seasonal retail rhythms. Whether the measure fully offsets the losses remains unclear; the industry expects at least a stabilization of revenues compared with the preceding hot days.
