Government Orders 30,000 Air Conditioning Units for Hospitals Amid Heatwave

Paris – 26.06.2026: The French government has placed an order for 30,000 air conditioning units for hospitals in response to the ongoing heatwave. This was announced by the Élysée Palace on Friday following a communication from the Prime Minister to mayors, outlining further measures to mitigate the effects of extreme temperatures. The initiative is part of a comprehensive action plan developed after repeated heatwaves and their impacts on public health.

The order comes amid rising temperatures, which continue to cause health emergencies in hospitals across large parts of France. At the same time, the plan was clarified by the Prime Minister the day before in a circular to local authorities to improve preparation and protection of the population, especially vulnerable groups. Equipping healthcare facilities with air conditioning units is intended to help reduce heat-related harm to patients and staff.

The measure underlines the growing priority given to climate adaptation in French domestic policy. In recent years, several nationwide heat records have triggered alarms, leading to increased awareness and stronger infrastructure measures. The procurement of 30,000 units poses a logistical challenge that requires swift implementation to ensure facilities are prepared in time for the upcoming summer.

In addition to the technical equipment of hospitals, the plan also includes intensified information campaigns and coordination mechanisms between government bodies. The goal is to increase responsiveness during heatwaves and to minimize health risks such as heat stroke and dehydration as effectively as possible. Authorities are appealing to the public to take more protective measures and to especially support vulnerable individuals.

The current heatwave has already led to several emergency interventions, and experts warn of an increase in such extreme weather events as a result of climate change. In France, numerous departments have recently been downgraded to a lower warning level, while other regions remain heavily affected. Thanks to prepared measures, the resilience of public infrastructure is set to be enhanced.

Overall, the order of air conditioning units signals an enhanced governmental response to the health challenges posed by climate change. It is part of a series of political initiatives covering both short-term protective measures and long-term adaptation strategies. The effectiveness of such programs will largely be measured by the speed of implementation and public acceptance.

The French government continues to reaffirm its responsibility to both protect citizens’ health and make public infrastructure resilient against further climate-related extreme stress. The coming months are considered crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of these measures and, if necessary, to make adjustments.
