Grenoble to file complaint after Barbara Butch concert was cut short

Grenoble – 20 July 2026: The city of Grenoble intends to file a complaint against persons unknown after a concert by DJ Barbara Butch was cut short. Mayor Laurence Ruffin announced the move on Monday. The performance at the municipal Cabaret Frappe festival was ended after about 20 minutes on Saturday, 18 July, at the Jardin de Ville. The reasons were a protest action and threats which, according to the city, compromised safety at the venue.

What was meant to begin as a shared evening on a summer stage quickly deteriorated, according to reports so far. A group of pro-Palestinian activists had accompanied the performance, chanting slogans and displaying banners, kufiyas and Palestinian flags. The city administration said there had been intimidation and violence directed at the artist and elected representatives present. Local media also reported that objects were thrown. These allegations must now be clarified by an investigation.

The organizers stopped the set in order to protect the audience, staff and artist. The city of Grenoble subsequently backed the festival association Retour de Scene and its teams. It also stressed that artistic programming freedom must not be overridden by threats or pressure. For visitors, the interruption meant the abrupt end of a concert that was part of the free summer festival in the city center.

The protest had been preceded since May by a call for a boycott, supported among others by the Grenoble group of La France insoumise. Critics objected to Barbara Butch’s signature on an appeal supporting a legislative proposal, since withdrawn, against new forms of antisemitism. According to reports, local LFI city councillor Allan Brunon was at the site of the demonstration. However, no individual responsibility for the incidents can be inferred from this.

Laurence Ruffin described the incident as serious and announced that the city wanted the courts to determine what had happened and who, if applicable, should be held accountable. The complaint against persons unknown is therefore not directed in advance at specific individuals. It was not initially publicly known on Monday whether, or against whom, police or prosecutors would open an investigation.

The case extends beyond Grenoble because it touches on a highly charged boundary: protest is protected, but disrupting an event through intimidation or violence cannot be regarded as normal political debate. For Barbara Butch, who had been the target of political controversy for weeks, the evening mainly resulted in an interrupted performance. The courts must now separate the facts from interpretations and mutual accusations.
