Épinal – A city tour full of stories, images and secrets

Épinal – the name alone sounds like a gentle flutter in the ear. A town in the heart of the Vosges that is far more than just a pretty backdrop. Here centuries-old traditions meet a charming liveliness. When you stroll through the streets, you immediately feel: even the houses tell stories, and behind every corner awaits a small surprise.

But how best to discover Épinal? Of course on foot! Only this way do you experience the town with all your senses – the smell of freshly baked madeleines in a side street, the gentle babble of the Moselle, or the colourful hustle and bustle on the Place des Vosges.

Come, let’s start our tour.

Overview of Épinal

Épinal is located in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region and, with just under 33,000 inhabitants, is the department’s capital. The town became famous above all for the renowned Images of Épinal, colourful prints that have gone out into the world since the 18th century. But the town offers much more: historic buildings, green parks, romantic riverbanks and an atmosphere that moves somewhere between cozy and lively.

The Moselle flows right through the town and effectively divides it into two faces: on one side the old Épinal with its picturesque alleys, on the other more modern districts with shops and cafés. This contrast is the attraction.

First stop: Château d’Épinal

Our walk begins with a short climb. From the centre it’s about a 15-minute uphill walk – past small houses and well-kept gardens – until you reach the ruins of the Château d’Épinal.

The castle originally dates from the 11th century and long served as a place of refuge and residence for the bishops of Metz. Although only a ruin remained after its destruction in the 17th century, the atmosphere up there is unique. Between the old walls a hint of the Middle Ages blows through, and the view over the town is simply impressive.

In the adjacent park you’ll find a small zoo, playgrounds and walking paths – perfect for a short breather. Those who feel like it can even climb the tower and feel like a little knight.

Second stop: Basilica Saint-Maurice

Back to the town centre. From the castle we head down towards the river – a pleasant walk through green paths leads us straight into the old town.

Here awaits the Basilica Saint-Maurice, a real gem. Construction began in the 11th century and continued over centuries, which is still evident today in the colourful mix of styles: Romanesque elements, Gothic extensions, Baroque details.

Particularly fascinating are the stained-glass windows that cast light in vibrant colours onto the stone floor. A tip: stand briefly in the middle of the nave and look up – the sense of space is hard to put into words.

Third stop: Musée de l’Image

Only a few minutes’ walk away, across the Moselle bridge, you reach the Musée de l’Image. From the outside the modern building seems to contrast with the historic surroundings. But inside the whole world of the famous Épinal prints unfolds.

Since the 18th century, the coloured woodcuts and lithographs have shaped French culture – from folk tales to religious scenes to political caricatures. The museum displays both old originals and contemporary artists who work with this medium.

Have you ever wondered how strongly images influence our thinking? In Épinal this question suddenly becomes tangible.

Fourth stop: Place des Vosges

Time for a break. From the museum we stroll back over the bridge towards the Place des Vosges, the town’s central square.

Life pulses here. Cafés with small terraces, elegant arcades, people meeting, talking, laughing. The square was created in the 18th century and bears the same name as the famous square in Paris – but feels much more relaxed.

Sit down for a moment, order a coffee or a glass of Vin de Lorraine, and watch the comings and goings. Sometimes these small moments are the nicest of a trip.

Fifth stop: Musée Départemental d’Art Ancien et Contemporain

Just a few steps further is one of the cultural highlights: the Musée Départemental d’Art Ancien et Contemporain.

The museum brings together contrasts – old masters like Rembrandt, Bruegel or Georges de La Tour hang here alongside contemporary artists. A journey through centuries of art history, compressed into one building.

Particularly exciting: the collection of Lorraine artworks that casts its own light on the region. Anyone who thinks art is only for experts will be proved wrong here.

Cultural highlights along the way

Épinal lives from its festivals and events. Every summer the Festival Rues & Cies takes place – a street arts festival where jugglers, musicians and acrobats turn the town centre into a big stage.

In autumn the Imagerie d’Épinal attracts visitors from all over the world when the famous printworks open their doors. You can witness live how the traditional woodcuts are made. The smell of printing ink hangs in the air while the machines click rhythmically – an experience like from another time.

Culinary highlights

Of course, enjoyment must not be missing. Vosges cuisine is hearty and full of flavour.

Be sure to try the Quiche Lorraine, which is served here in a very traditional way. Or the Tourte Vosgienne, a hearty meat-filled pie.

For dessert, a slice of Tarte aux Myrtilles, a blueberry tart baked with the wild berries of the Vosges, fits perfectly. Accompany it with a small glass of mirabelle plum liqueur – it even warms you on a cool evening.

And if you’re out early in the morning: look out for a Madeleine, fresh from the oven. The scent alone makes you happy.

Recommendations for a perfect day

Épinal is not a town to experience in a hurry. Better plan a whole day, maybe even two. Start up at the castle, stroll slowly through the old town, let yourself be enchanted in the museum of images, treat yourself to a break on the Place des Vosges and dive into history at the art museum.

In between: pause again and again, look, feel. Épinal unfolds its charm quietly – but sustainably.

Because in the end you’ll notice: this town not only stays in your memory, it settles somewhere between heart and gut.
