Heat and Low Water Are Severely Hitting River Fishing in Département Ain

Ain – 01.07.2026: Persistent heat and low water are putting the rivers in the Département Ain under severe stress. In several valleys, angling associations and conservation groups report drastically warmed, shallow waters in which cold-dependent species such as trout can hardly find refuge. Particularly affected are smaller tributaries and upper reaches with little shading, where the water heats up quickly.

Ain – 01.07.2026: Experts point out that water temperatures above about 25 degrees significantly reduce oxygen content and can be critical to fatal for many native freshwater fish. The consequences range from apathy and escape behavior to local mass die-offs in cut-off river arms or ponds. According to consistent observations, such heat spikes have recurred over several summers and amplify the effects of low flows.

Ain – 01.07.2026: To limit immediate losses, angling clubs and the departmental fisheries federation have organized capture and relocation operations on rivers such as the Albarine near Ambérieu-en-Bugey. Using nets and buckets, fish are moved from heavily heated, shallow sections to cooler areas or temporarily secured in aerated containers. The operations are coordinated with the authorities and rely on volunteers who map sections, measure temperatures and identify potential refuge pools.

Ain – 01.07.2026: The prefecture has activated additional monitoring and conservation measures in view of the drought. In the drought committee, targeted restrictions on water withdrawals, irrigation windows and exceptions for priority uses were established to secure residual flows in the riverbeds. Municipalities and operators are being urged to document withdrawals and to consider emergency releases from reservoirs if ecological minimum flows are threatened.

Ain – 01.07.2026: Associations recommend in the short term to refrain from catch-and-release at high temperatures, to temporarily close sensitive stretches and to shade riverbanks where this is possible without interfering with protected populations. In the medium to long term, restoration, re-connecting side arms, structural improvements in the streambed and protection of spring areas come into focus. The aim is to dampen temperature peaks, preserve cold-water refuges and improve connectivity for migratory movements.

Ain – 01.07.2026: Scientists and practitioners warn that without countermeasures the species composition is likely to shift: cold-loving salmonids will lose habitat while warm-tolerant species benefit. The current situation in the Ain is seen as an example of a broader trend of rising water temperatures in France’s flowing waters. Water management authorities, municipalities and users face the task of more tightly managing use conflicts during heat periods and firmly securing ecological minimum requirements.
