Heat drives travelers to the Vosges: Gérardmer records a sharp increase in visitors

Gérardmer – July 16, 2026: The ongoing heat across large parts of France is changing many people’s holiday plans. More travelers are heading to low and mid-mountain regions rather than particularly hot coastal areas. According to recent reports, the Vosges resort town of Gérardmer is welcoming significantly more visitors than during a typical July summer.

For many overnight guests, the fact that temperatures drop, especially at night, is a decisive reason. According to travelers, temperatures at higher elevations around Gérardmer can fall to 17 to 18 degrees. This makes it easier to sleep and creates a clear contrast with densely populated urban areas and strongly heated coastal regions, where the heat often lingers into the night.

The tense weather situation continues nationwide on Thursday. In the morning, Météo-France raised the alert level in 31 departments due to extreme heat and issued warnings in another 21 departments because of the possibility of severe thunderstorms. Highs of 34 degrees were expected in Paris in the afternoon and 35 degrees in Toulouse. Thunderstorms are also possible in northeastern France.

Gérardmer benefits from its location surrounded by lakes, forests, and mountain ranges. The regional tourism program in July focuses on waterside activities, guided walks, family outings, and outdoor events. On July 16, guided kayak tours on Lake Longemer and guided hiking events in Gérardmer are scheduled, among other activities.

The increase in visitors presents an opportunity for hotels, campsites, the hospitality industry, and leisure operators. At the same time, it also creates operational challenges for municipalities. Higher occupancy increases demand for parking, pressure on roads, and strain on sensitive natural environments. Especially on hot days, preventing forest and vegetation fires in the dry Vosges Mountains remains an important task.

This trend shows how strongly weather extremes are now influencing tourism choices. Météo-France classified June 2026 as the hottest June since nationwide records began. The intense heatwave from June 17 to 30 and the continuing drought have placed a burden on many regions since early summer. As a result, resorts in cooler locations are becoming more attractive to people planning trips at short notice.

Whether the increase in visitors to Gérardmer will continue over the coming weeks depends on future weather developments and available accommodation. However, for the regional tourism sector, this summer’s situation is an indication that mountain and lake regions in inland France are increasingly being recognized as climatically more favorable alternative travel destinations.
