Heatwave in France: the Minister of Health calls for special protection of isolated individuals

Paris – 24.06.2026: The persistent heatwave in France has put health authorities on alert. In a statement on France 2, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist warned against underestimating the risks for particularly vulnerable people. “We are already seeing that the number of isolated people admitted to emergency rooms is increasing,” said Ms. Rist. She called on the public to collectively commit to protecting this group of people. She invites neighbors, relatives, and social institutions to pay more attention to them and provide help in order to prevent heat-related health damage.

This period of intense heat is causing a significant burden in several regions, especially for the elderly and chronically ill, who are often socially isolated. French prefectures have now placed several departments under maximum heatwave alert, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The most frequent cases to be treated are overheating, dehydration, and health collapses, which must be avoided through quick intervention.

The risk of heat-related illnesses increases not only because of extreme temperatures but also due to the social conditions of many affected individuals. The minister emphasized that, in addition to medical measures, societal responsibility is required. The mobilization of civil society is crucial to focus on isolated individuals and to be able to act preventively.

Alongside the measures of the health authorities, the government is also working on coordinated crisis management. This includes the distribution of drinking water and cooling devices, as well as the establishment of hotlines intended to provide targeted support to at-risk people. In addition, emergency and rescue medical staff have been reinforced to deal with a probable increase in the number of patients.

The French meteorological agency Météo-France maintains the highest heatwave alerts in several regions. Experts warn that temperatures could rise further in the coming days, underscoring the need to continue precautionary measures. Experiences from previous heatwaves show that systematic data collection and support for isolated people can save lives.

Health Minister Rist stated that she would continue to closely monitor the situation’s development and mobilize additional resources if necessary. It is essential to minimize the impact of heat on public health and prevent an escalation of emergencies. The situation remains critical, especially due to demographic changes and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.

Social solidarity and effective state measures thus constitute two central pillars to mitigate the consequences of the heatwave. The government calls on all citizens to remain vigilant and provide concrete help to vulnerable people. This is indispensable to prevent health damage and deaths in a context of increased climate risks.
