Heatwave warms tap water in Châtellerault to nearly 30 degrees

Châtellerault – 07.08.2026: The persistent summer heat in Châtellerault has now reached the water pipes. According to a report by Franceinfo, a temperature of almost 30 degrees was measured at a tap there – even though the water came from the cold-water line. Normally, it should flow from the tap considerably cooler.

High outdoor temperatures can warm household connections and pipes, especially when water remains in them for long periods. This applies, for example, to pipes running through overheated parts of buildings or insufficiently cooled rooms. Pipe sections in sunny outdoor areas may also be affected. However, a single measurement does not yet allow conclusions to be drawn about the temperature or quality of the entire municipal drinking water network.

The French Ministry of Health recommends generally using water from the cold-water line for drinking, cooking, and preparing food. If it becomes permanently warm, substances can more easily leach from pipe materials; in addition, bacteriological quality may suffer. If water comes out of the tap unusually warm after standing for a long time, it should first be allowed to run until it becomes noticeably cooler.

Particular attention is being paid to Legionella. Under suitable temperatures and with little water exchange, the bacteria can multiply in technical installations. Health authorities recommend testing affected systems for Legionella when cold-water temperatures exceed 25 degrees. Infection does not usually result from drinking the water, but from inhaling fine water droplets, for example while showering.

Legionella can cause severe pneumonia. Older people, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic respiratory illnesses face an increased risk. However, warm cold water does not automatically mean that a health-threatening contamination is present. Whether bacteria are present can only be determined through a professional test.

In private households, it is advisable to let water that has been standing for a long time run before using it and to clean showerheads and faucet aerators regularly. In residential complexes, hotels, care facilities, and other buildings with complex installations, operators are responsible for inspections and any necessary technical measures. Longer pipe runs and rarely used outlets can promote stagnation there.

Drinking water quality in France is monitored by regional health authorities; inspection results for individual municipalities are publicly available. The measurement in Châtellerault initially concerns one tap. However, it draws attention to a specific side effect of long heat periods: even properly treated drinking water can warm considerably on its way through pipes and buildings.
