Heat Drives Prices: Resale of Portable Air Conditioners Booms on Online Platforms

Paris – 07.07.2026: Persistent heatwaves in France have put the market for portable air conditioners under strong pressure. While promotional stock in stores often sells out quickly, offers at significantly higher prices are multiplying on online marketplaces. Observations show price ranges between about 300 and 1,000 euros – sometimes for identical models that had been available more cheaply in retail shortly before. Consumer organizations speak of an excess in demand that is being deliberately exploited by intermediaries.

Several private and semi-professional sellers report that they bought larger quantities during special offers at grocery stores or electronics retailers in order to resell the devices online with markups. Prices rise particularly quickly for sought-after promotional models as soon as stocks in the markets are exhausted. For households without permanently installed cooling, access to short-term solutions thus becomes considerably more expensive.

At the same time, warnings about dubious listings are increasing. In addition to overpriced offers, fake shops and advance-payment ads appear where goods are not delivered despite payment. The directorate responsible for consumer protection DGCCRF and relevant portals advise checking sellers’ identities, favoring reviews and secure payment methods, and reporting suspicious entries. Platforms point to reporting functions and spot checks, but also see buyers as responsible for comparing prices and avoiding unrealistic promises.

On the supplier side, logistical bottlenecks are aggravating the situation. Retailers report extended delivery times, empty shelves during major promotions, and an overall strained supply situation. Industry representatives point to seasonality: production, import and distribution of portable devices can only be expanded to a limited extent in midsummer. In the short term, this benefits actors who can procure and store quickly, while end consumers bear the markups.

Economically, this is a combined demand and supply shock, amplified by speculative resale. Consumer protection advocates are calling for transparent price information, clearer indications of delivery capability and the consistent removal of misleading listings. As guidance, official price recommendations, rules on the right of withdrawal and warranties, and avoiding cash or anonymous payments for distance purchases apply.

For everyday life, experts recommend checking alternatives before buying — for example fans, shading, cross-ventilation during cooler hours and efficient use of existing devices. Mass parallel use of portable air conditioners increases electricity demand noticeably and can additionally strain local grids. Those who still want to buy should check the energy efficiency class, the noise rating and the retailer’s return policies and avoid price spikes by planning early.
