"I didn't even know I was eligible!" – The good (and bad) surprises of aid for "frequent drivers"

Paris – 27.05.2026: In view of the recent increases in fuel prices, the French government has introduced special support for so-called “frequent drivers”. This measure aims to alleviate the financial burden for those who travel long distances daily with their private vehicles for professional purposes. A recently introduced online calculator enables citizens to check whether they qualify for this support, which has led to unexpected results for some.

The support consists of a one-time payment of 50 euros, which corresponds to a relief of 20 cents per liter for an average fuel consumption over three months. To receive this aid, certain criteria must be met. For example, the applicant must be a tax resident of France and have been at least 16 years old on December 31, 2024. Additionally, the applicant must be employed or self-employed and have an income of up to 16,880 euros per taxpayer in 2024.

A “frequent driver” is defined as someone who commutes at least 15 kilometers daily or drives at least 8,000 kilometers annually for professional purposes. The support is intended for individuals who use a private vehicle with a thermal or non-rechargeable hybrid engine and regularly insure it.

The application is submitted via the personal online portal at impots.gouv.fr. From May 27, 2026, eligible persons can file their application. After successful verification, the support is transferred to the specified bank account within approximately ten days.

Despite the clear criteria, the use of the online calculator led to unexpected results for some users. Some discovered that they were entitled to the support, although they had not expected it, while others were surprised that they did not qualify. These differences raise questions about the accuracy and user-friendliness of the system.

The government emphasizes, however, that the online calculator is based on the information provided and that the final eligibility depends on a detailed check. It is recommended to use the calculator as a first step and to contact the competent authorities directly in case of doubt.

Overall, this measure aims to relieve the financial burden for those who depend on daily use of their vehicle because of their profession. The support is part of a broader government strategy to counter the effects of rising fuel prices and to promote the mobility of workers.
