Massive Firefighter Deployments in the Loire: More Than 250 Firefighters Mobilized to Tackle Vegetation Fires

Saint-Just-la-Pendue – 27 June 2026: On the afternoon of Saturday, 27 June 2026, a severe vegetation fire broke out in the municipality of Saint-Just-la-Pendue. The fire destroyed around 100 hectares of stubble fields and threatened adjacent residential areas. The alert was raised at 2 p.m., and within a very short time, 155 firefighters from around twenty fire stations in the region were mobilized. A firefighting helicopter and two drones also supported the extinguishing operations.

The response was particularly difficult due to the extreme drought and high temperatures. Firefighters worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading and to protect the affected areas. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

In the neighboring municipality of Sainte-Colombe-sur-Gand, another fire broke out and spread rapidly, requiring a major deployment of firefighters. In total, 37 vehicles and 110 firefighters from 21 fire stations in the Loire were mobilized to fight this large-scale fire. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, residents of neighboring hamlets were asked to evacuate their homes.

These events occurred amid a historic heatwave affecting the entire Loire department. Temperatures reached peaks of up to 39.2 °C, considerably increasing the risk of fire. The prefecture had therefore placed the department on maximum alert and banned all outdoor fires.

Firefighters were assisted in their work by farmers, who used tractors and water tanks to contain the fire. This cooperation between fire services and the agricultural sector was crucial in bringing the fires under control and limiting the damage.

The municipality of Saint-Just-la-Pendue had recently inaugurated a new fire station at a cost of 1.4 million euros. This modern infrastructure played a central role in the current operations and highlights the importance of investment in local firefighting equipment.

Despite the intensity of the efforts by emergency teams and the support of the local population, the fires could not be completely extinguished. Firefighters are continuing their operations to eliminate remaining hotspots and prevent any further spread. The authorities announced that they would continue to monitor the situation closely and make additional resources available if necessary.

The incidents in the Loire illustrate the growing danger of vegetation fires during periods of extreme weather conditions. Cooperation between firefighters, farmers, and the local population is essential to deal with such disasters and ensure the safety of the affected municipalities.
