Investigations into Allegedly Manipulated Pétanque Matches: Dylan Rocher Questioned

Toulon – 02.07.2026: Police and prosecutors in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region detained and questioned several prominent pétanque players at the start of the week. According to multiple media reports, this includes the multiple-decorated world champion Dylan Rocher. The Toulon public prosecutor’s office is investigating on suspicion of fraudulent sports betting and possible match-fixing. Those affected deny the allegations and said they are cooperating with the authorities.

According to current knowledge, this is a preliminary investigation into alleged “escroquerie en bande organisée” (organized fraud) and corruption offenses. The focus is on matches in which unusual betting patterns were reportedly registered. Investigators are thus analyzing communication data and betting movements; searches and extended interrogations were used to secure evidence. No formal charges have been decided. The presumption of innocence applies.

The affair hits the sport just before a season highlight: the traditional Mondial La Marseillaise à pétanque in Marseille begins in early July. Organizers and associations stress the importance of transparency and integrity while also pointing to the jurisdiction of the judiciary. The Fédération Française de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal is, according to sources close to it, examining possible sporting sanctions, but has not announced any measures so far.

Legally, a “garde à vue” is an investigative tool with strict time limits and judicial oversight. Depending on the state of the investigation, it can lead to the opening of a judicial preliminary investigation or to case dismissal. Reports mention a possible trial in 2027; this has not been officially confirmed. Lawyers warn that questions of guilt should only be assessed on the basis of evidence that will hold up in court.

Beyond the specific case, a young, heavily mediated precision sport is under scrutiny. Pétanque benefits from TV broadcasts and a growing betting market — factors that can increase susceptibility to manipulation. Regulators and operators in France have established compliance rules, such as reporting obligations for irregularities and limits on certain types of bets. Whether these mechanisms were triggered in the present case and what role private bookmakers played remains open.

For local clubs, sponsors and venues, the question arises of how to handle suspected cases during ongoing tournaments: between protecting athletes’ trust and the need for thorough clarification, interim measures such as watch lists, expanded integrity briefings and close-knit betting market screenings are common. Official statements in this procedure are being issued by the Toulon public prosecutor’s office; further information is expected in light of the progress of the investigations.
