Investigations into Manipulated Bets: Several Pétanque Stars in Police Custody

Paris – 02.07.2026: In a coordinated operation by the public prosecutor’s office and the police, several prominent French pétanque players were temporarily taken into police custody on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to consistent media reports, investigators are examining whether individual matches at high-level competitions were manipulated and whether there are links to illegal sports betting. The trigger were reportedly unusual betting movements around major tournaments.

Among those affected, according to sources in the judiciary and sports circles, are Dylan Rocher, multiple-time world champion and one of the sport’s leading figures, as well as Henri Lacroix. Searches and interviews took place in several departments, particularly in southern France. Investigators want to clarify whether there were agreements between players and alleged betting intermediaries and what roles individual participants may have taken on.

The responsible police judiciaire is investigating on suspicion of fraud related to sports betting as well as possible organized structures. The focus is on financial flows and communication data that could provide clues to collusion. According to authorities, there are currently no charges; this is an early stage of the investigation in which the presumption of innocence applies. Lawyers for several of the persons involved signaled cooperation with the authorities and denied the allegations.

The case affects a sport that is deeply rooted in France: pétanque counts millions of recreational players and has a professional elite with national and international championships. The Fédération Française de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal said it is working closely with investigators and condemns any form of manipulation. At the same time, the federation stressed that sanctions would only be considered after conclusive findings; disciplinary measures would be guided by the outcomes of the judicial process.

Betting operators and regulators have been monitoring niche sports for years, as their markets can be more vulnerable to interference. In France, the Autorité nationale des jeux oversees legal sports betting and forwards notices of irregularities to the police and judiciary. Experts point out that even small bets in thin markets can trigger significant odds movements – a circumstance that increases manipulation risks and at the same time provides starting points for investigations.

The public prosecutor’s office announced that it will decide on possible further measures after evaluating the seized documents. Whether there will be indictments, disciplinary proceedings within the federation, or sporting bans depends on the results of the investigation. Until then, details about the matches concerned and possible money flows remain confidential.
