Iran and USA: Disagreement over Planned Agreement and Opening of the Strait of Hormuz

Washington – 14.06.2026: US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that an agreement with Iran is to be signed on Sunday, which would lead to the immediate opening of the strategically important Gulf of Hormuz. Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social: “The agreement is to be signed tomorrow, and immediately after its signing, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to all.” This announcement followed earlier statements in which Trump had signaled a forthcoming end to the conflict in the Middle East and the reopening of the Gulf of Hormuz.

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei contradicted this timeline and declared that the signing of the memorandum would not take place on Sunday. He emphasized, though, that a signing in the coming days could not be ruled out. Baghaei said: “We still have to wait to learn the exact date of the memorandum’s signing. Although it will not happen tomorrow, a signing in the next few days cannot be excluded.”

The differences between the two countries concern several key points. A senior Iranian official explained that the draft memorandum covers a broad spectrum, from Iran’s nuclear activities to the reopening of the Gulf of Hormuz and exemptions from US oil sanctions. A final agreement is supposed to be discussed within 60 days after both parties’ approval.

Another point of contention is the question of Iran’s right to uranium enrichment. Tehran demands recognition of this right and the retention of stocks of highly enriched uranium on its own soil. Washington, however, requires the relinquishment of these stocks.

The negotiations are influenced by external factors. For instance, an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, which killed a senior representative of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, led to new tensions in the region. Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US of failing to uphold its commitments after Israeli strikes took place in southern Beirut.

Despite these challenges, both the US and Iran emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution. Trump described the agreement as a “protective wall against any nuclear weapon” and expressed hope that the process would proceed “quickly, simply, and smoothly.”

The international community is closely monitoring the developments, as an agreement between the US and Iran could have far-reaching impacts on regional security and global energy supply. The next few days will be crucial to determine whether the differences can be overcome and a formal agreement can be reached.

Experts, however, warn against drawing premature conclusions. Tensions in the Middle East are complex, and many details of the planned agreement remain unclear. Additionally, current regional political events are affecting the negotiation process, which complicates a swift resolution. Observers emphasize that trust and patience are essential to achieving a lasting solution. The precise role of other international actors will also be a test for the success of the negotiations.
