Isabelle Huppert Elected President of the Cinémathèque française

Paris – 02.07.2026: Isabelle Huppert was elected President of the Cinémathèque française on 2 July 2026. The 73-year-old actress s쳮ds director Costa-Gavras, who had shaped the institution since 2007. For the first time since its founding in 1936, a woman therefore takes the chair of the renowned film-culture institution in Paris.

Huppert was elected by the newly constituted General Assembly for a three-year term. Prior to that a new board of directors was confirmed, which, according to the official statement, includes among others the directors Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis and Nicolas Philibert. The vote took place in the presence of representatives of the leadership; Costa-Gavras’s departure was formally honored.

The appointment comes at a time of intense debate about the direction and governance of the Cinémathèque. In 2024 and 2025, reports, parliamentary hearings and internal reviews dealt with allegations against management and programming. Issues raised included questions about workplace culture, curatorial responsibility and the balance between maintaining the canon and contemporary perspectives. This led to pressure to review committee structures and make decision-making processes more transparent.

Huppert brings an extraordinary artistic authority. Her international festival presence, collaborations with influential film auteurs and numerous awards lend her presidency visibility and cultural-political weight. Observers expect that she will sharpen the Cinémathèque’s profile as archive, study center and programmer alike, and emphasize the bridge between historical heritage and contemporary film languages more strongly.

Operationally, consolidation and confidence-building are now priorities. On the agenda are likely to be questions about public funding, cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, the maintenance of international partnerships, as well as the accessibility of the collections – for example through digitization and curated series. It will also be crucial how the newly appointed board works together and which executive functions are put in place to implement decisions effectively.

For the French cultural sector, Huppert’s election marks a visible generational and perspective shift at the head of a key institution. It sends a signal for greater diversity in leadership positions while raising the bar for transparent governance. Crucial for credibility after the controversies of recent years will be the first substantive initiatives and structural decisions in the coming weeks – from programming policy to processes that systematically incorporate participation and criticism.
