A severe traffic accident has shaken the Mediterranean city of Antibes on the Côte d’Azur. Early in the afternoon of June 2, a truck collided with a line of vehicles, causing a chain reaction that spread across numerous vehicles within seconds. In total, 22 cars were involved in the accident, with 37 people sustaining minor injuries.
The accident occurred around 2 p.m. in the northern urban area on a busy traffic artery leading to the A8 highway. This route is one of the most heavily used in the region and is especially congested during rush hours. It was precisely there that a scenario unfolded that left witnesses speechless hours later.
According to the information available so far, the truck lost control on a slope and crashed forcefully into the vehicles in front of it. The cars were pushed against each other, with several vehicles heavily damaged. Some witnesses reported that the vehicles were literally thrown through the air. On the street, a scene of destruction was visible: dented bodies, destroyed front fenders, and a traffic jam stretching for kilometers.
Despite the dramatic images, the outcome is considered exceptionally mild. Given the large number of vehicles involved and the immense impact energy, emergency services initially feared much more severe consequences. That no one was seriously injured is regarded by many observers as almost a miracle.
Within minutes, fire, ambulance, and police services arrived in large numbers at the scene. The injured were treated on site or taken to nearby hospitals. While the recovery operations lasted several hours, the road in question remained closed. Traffic in and around Antibes was significantly disrupted.
The truck driver was taken into police custody by the authorities. Investigators are now examining the exact cause of the accident. Both a possible technical malfunction and human errors are being considered. Whether brake problems, a driving error, or another cause caused the accident is still unknown.
For Antibes, the incident raises questions again about traffic safety. The roads between the coastal area, residential neighborhoods, industrial zones, and the highway have been considered heavily burdened for years. Where heavy traffic, roundabouts, and slopes meet, often one moment is enough to cause a chain reaction with far-reaching consequences.
The accident impressively shows how quickly an everyday traffic situation can turn into a large-scale incident – and how thin the line sometimes is between a mild outcome and a tragedy.
