JR’s “Caverne” reopens to the public after emergency repairs at Pont Neuf

Paris – June 17, 2026: The monumental art installation “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR has reopened to the public after extensive repair work. Originally scheduled to open on June 6, 2026, the launch was postponed to June 15 due to damage caused by strong winds and rain.

The installation transforms the 17th-century Pont-Neuf into an impressive artificial cave measuring 18 meters high and 120 meters long. It consists of 80 air-inflated arches and was made by more than 800 people across France. The project is supported by the sale of JR’s artworks and private sponsors.

Visitors can enter “La Caverne” around the clock every day until June 28, 2026. This immersive experience is further enhanced by a soundscape created by former Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter and a specially developed scent reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

Known for his large-scale public artworks, JR drew inspiration for this project from Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1985 installation that wrapped the Pont-Neuf. “La Caverne” is a homage to that historic event and offers visitors the opportunity to experience Paris’s oldest bridge in a new and captivating way.

The installation is a technical masterpiece, erected directly without nails or screws in order to preserve the historical value of the Pont-Neuf. It was manufactured entirely in France and demonstrates the innovative strength of the French art scene.

Despite the initial weather-related delay, “La Caverne” has already captivated many visitors, and its unique atmosphere and artistic concept have been highly praised. It offers an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history, and architecture in Paris.

The project is part of the growing number of temporary art installations in the French capital, aiming to creatively use public space and create new forms of cultural and historical communication. “La Caverne” complements the diverse attractions along the Seine, which draw millions of tourists and local residents every year.
