JR’s “Caverne” on the Pont-Neuf Accessible Again After Urgent Repairs

Paris – 17.06.2026: The monumental art installation “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR is once again open to the public after extensive repairs. Originally planned for June 6, 2026, the opening had to be postponed to June 15 due to damage caused by strong winds and heavy rains.

The installation transforms the 17th-century Pont-Neuf into an impressive artificial cave, 18 meters high and 120 meters long. It consists of 80 air-filled arches and was created by over 800 people across France. The project was financed through the sale of JR’s artworks as well as private sponsors.

Visitors can enter the “Caverne” around the clock daily until June 28, 2026. The immersive experience is enhanced by a soundscape designed by Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, and a specially developed scent reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

JR, known for his large-scale public artworks, drew inspiration for this project from the 1985 wrapping of the Pont-Neuf by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. “La Caverne” is a tribute to this historic event and invites visitors to experience Paris’s oldest bridge in a new and captivating way.

The installation is a technical masterpiece, constructed directly on the Pont-Neuf without the use of nails or screws to protect the historical value of the bridge. It was entirely made in France and showcases the innovation of the French art scene.

Despite initial delays due to the weather, the “Caverne” has already attracted numerous visitors who appreciate the unique atmosphere and artistic concept of the installation. It offers an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history, and architecture in Paris.

The project is part of a growing number of temporary art installations in the French capital aimed at creatively utilizing public space and creating new forms of cultural-historical communication. “La Caverne” complements the diverse offerings along the Seine that draw millions of tourists and locals every year.

For those who have not yet visited the “Caverne,” there is a chance until June 28, 2026, to experience this impressive artwork and engage personally with JR’s creative vision and the contributing artists. The installation exemplifies the fusion of contemporary art with Paris’s historic heritage and promotes a new approach to familiar urban landmarks.
