Young Generation Uses TikTok to Cope with Climate Anxiety During Heatwave

Paris – 24.06.2026: As France suffers from a historic heatwave, more and more young people under 25 are using the platform TikTok to process their fears in light of the climate crisis. Social media offers not only entertainment but also an important space for exchanging ecological concerns and personal experiences.

The current heatwave has reached temperatures of up to 40°C in many regions and has already led to numerous health problems. Since June 18, the Ministry of Health has recorded 40 deaths by drowning, mainly among young people. These numbers illustrate the dramatic consequences of the heat, which affects not only physical but also mental health.

In this climate, concern is growing about “eco-anxiety” (Éco-anxiété), a condition triggered by the perception of environmental destruction and fear for the future. Psychologists warn of the psychological consequences of climate change, especially for the younger generation, which increasingly feels powerless.

TikTok has established itself as an important platform where young users share their worries, support each other, and also discuss concrete ways to act against climate change. These digital communities offer a safe place where those affected can find understanding and seek solutions together.

At the same time, there are critical voices questioning TikTok’s role in dealing with mental health issues. In March 2026, the French Ministry of Education launched an investigation against the platform because content promoting eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide could be spreading there. These concerns raise questions about the responsibility of social media and their impact on mental health.

Despite these risks, TikTok remains a central place for many young people to exchange views on climate anxiety. Experts emphasize the importance of fostering such communities to raise awareness of environmental issues and mobilize collective action. However, it is essential to critically evaluate the quality of information and avoid misinformation.

Thus, social media play a dual role: they can provide support but also create new burdens and uncertainties. Society and politics are called upon to responsibly guide the use of digital platforms and strengthen measures to protect mental health.

In view of the ongoing heatwave and the far-reaching consequences of climate change, structural measures must be taken to sustainably protect the population’s mental health and effectively combat the causes of global warming. Only through a combination of individual support and political action can the challenges be adequately addressed.
