Paris – 03.07.2026: The recent heatwave in June led to a marked excess mortality in France, according to preliminary data. Santé publique France reported that daily deaths rose noticeably from June 23. The health minister pointed to a first estimate of at least 2,025 additional deaths that could be linked to the heat event. The authority emphasizes that this is an incomplete count based on rapid reporting data, which will only be consolidated after the summer.
Basis for the assessment are analyses of the national surveillance and reporting system SurSaUD as well as short-term analyses of daily death data. Since June 24, these series have already shown an excess of around 1,000 deaths compared with seasonally usual comparison values. The higher overall estimate results from lagging regional reports and extended queries that still need to be incorporated into the official statistics. A final evaluation with age structure, regional distribution and distinction between direct and indirect heat causes is expected after the validation phase.
Authorities also report qualitative patterns known from previous heatwaves and reappearing in June. Accordingly, not only the very elderly were affected; some deaths occurred in private households. The Ministry of Health has activated the response level of the Plan ORSAN EPI CLIM to relieve hospitals and emergency services and mobilized additional resources. Municipalities and prefectures simultaneously called for heat-protection measures — for example, using cool spaces, adequate fluid intake and actively contacting vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
Experts point out that heat effects can occur with delay, for example when pre-existing conditions worsen. For this reason, registry reconciliations between registry offices, health authorities and statistical agencies are still ongoing. Meteorological factors such as the duration of night-time tropical temperatures and regional differences in air quality also play a role in the health burden. The expected comprehensive analysis by Santé publique France will take these influencing factors into account and relate them to locally issued warning levels.
The preliminary tally intensifies the political discussion about prevention and adaptation: municipalities and départements are working on heat-protection plans with drinking fountains, cooling zones, shading and greening. Employers are being reminded of duties to protect employees during high temperatures; care and support facilities are reviewing emergency protocols. Once the data analysis is complete, the government plans to examine whether guidelines for early warning, urban planning and health preparedness need to be tightened.
