Kylian Mbappé breaks the French national team goal record

Paris – June 17, 2026: Kylian Mbappé contributed to France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal on June 16, 2026, scoring two goals and surpassing Olivier Giroud to become the top scorer in the history of the French national team. The 27-year-old striker from Real Madrid, who has scored 58 goals in 99 matches, is now the highest goal scorer for “Les Bleus.”

In the group stage opener of the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in the United States, France, led by coach Didier Deschamps, had a strong start. The team had an unstable start due to technical mistakes and inaccurate passes that allowed Senegal several chances, but stabilized after halftime. Tactical adjustments made Michael Olise the focal point of the attack, and with precise play, he orchestrated the game and provided two assists to Mbappé. Thanks to his performance, Olise was chosen as “Man of the Match.”

Mbappé’s first goal came in the 66th minute, assisted by Olise’s excellent pass, and his second was a powerful long-range shot during added time that secured France’s victory. With these two goals, Mbappé surpassed Giroud’s record of 57 goals in 137 matches.

Furthermore, Mbappé has scored 14 goals in World Cups, breaking the all-time record previously held by Just Fontaine. He is now just two goals away from the world record of 16 held by Miroslav Klose.

Before the tournament, there had been criticism of Mbappé’s form, but his performance against Senegal dispelled any doubts. Coach Deschamps especially praised Mbappé’s leadership and central role within the team.

French media and football experts have hailed Mbappé’s record-breaking achievement as a milestone in the history of domestic football and regard it as an event symbolizing an era of exceptional talent in French football. The victory over Senegal has given “Les Bleus” confidence heading into further matches in the group stage.

France’s next opponent is the Iraq national team. Mbappé and his teammates are eager to build on their momentum and pave the way for their third World Cup title. Expectations are high, and the national team is determined to prove their status as favorites at the 2026 tournament.

Mbappé’s growth and role as a team leader are also reflected in the overall energy and confidence of the team. His goal-scoring record is not only a personal achievement but also a driving force for France to continue delivering outstanding performances in the World Cup.
