The A6 in Fontainebleau remains closed for the time being following the forest fires

Fontainebleau – 15 July 2026: The A6 motorway remains closed in both directions for the time being near Fontainebleau, in Seine-et-Marne. Operator APRR stated that an immediate reopening is not possible following the severe forest fires. Specialists must first inspect the affected section and ensure the safety of the infrastructure. Signposted diversions remain in place for travellers.

The fires in the forest area of Fontainebleau broke out on Sunday, 12 July, near Noisy-sur-Ecole and spread rapidly. The incident command has since reported that the fire fronts have been contained within their areas of spread. However, they have not yet been completely extinguished. Firefighters therefore remain on site to locate embers and prevent further fires.

The closure affects an important transport route between the Paris region and Lyon. APRR had already closed the A6 on Sunday due to the fire’s proximity to the roadway and the heavy smoke. For traffic heading towards Paris, the motorway operator recommends alternative routes via the A19, Sens and the A5. Diversions have also been set up in the direction of Lyon.

For reopening, it is not enough for the flames to stop spreading. According to the operator, the roadways, protective installations, signage and technical equipment along the section must be inspected, among other things. In addition, firefighters’ work around the motorway may delay reopening. No specific date has yet been given for traffic to resume.

According to authorities, the fires have affected more than 2,000 hectares in the Fontainebleau massif. Several hundred firefighters took part in the operations, supported by water-bombing aircraft and helicopters. Residents of at-risk areas were moved preventively to safe locations. After the situation stabilised, the first evacuation measures could gradually be lifted.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed on 14 July that the A6 remained impassable near Fontainebleau. The closure is intended to protect travellers, emergency teams and workers inspecting the damage. Drivers should consult the motorway operator’s updated traffic information before setting off and allow considerably more time for diversion routes.

The investigation into the cause of the fires is ongoing. The Fontainebleau public prosecutor’s office is handling the case after a man was arrested in connection with one of the fires. Apart from the criminal investigations, the current priority for authorities is securing the forest area and transport routes. The A6 will only reopen when there is no longer any danger.
