JR’s “Cave” on the Pont-Neuf accessible again after urgent repairs

Paris – 17 June 2026: The monumental art installation “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” by French street artist JR is once again open to the public after extensive repair work. Originally scheduled for 6 June 2026, the opening had to be postponed until 15 June due to damage caused by strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The installation transforms the Pont-Neuf, built in the 17th century, into an impressive artificial cave measuring 18 metres high and 120 metres long. It consists of 80 inflatable arches and was created by more than 800 people in France. The project was financed through the sale of JR’s works as well as private patrons.

Visitors can enter the “Caverne” 24 hours a day until 28 June 2026. The immersive experience is enhanced by a soundscape designed by Thomas Bangalter, former member of Daft Punk, as well as a specially developed fragrance reminiscent of the smell of earth after rain.

JR, known for his large-scale public works, drew inspiration for this project from the wrapping of the Pont-Neuf carried out in 1985 by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. “La Caverne” pays tribute to this historic event and invites visitors to rediscover Paris’s oldest bridge in a fascinating new way.

The installation is a technical feat, built directly on the Pont-Neuf without nails or screws in order to preserve the bridge’s historical value. It was entirely manufactured in France and illustrates the innovation of the French art scene.

Despite the initial delays caused by bad weather, the “Caverne” has already attracted many visitors who appreciate the installation’s unique atmosphere and artistic concept. It offers an opportunity to rediscover the connection between art, history and architecture in Paris.

The project is part of a growing number of temporary art installations in the French capital, aimed at using public space creatively and inventing new forms of cultural and historical mediation. The “Caverne” thus complements the diversity of attractions along the Seine that appeal to millions of tourists and residents each year.
