Illegal possession of wild animals in France is on the rise: fennecs, servals, and lynxes in the spotlight

The fennec, a small desert fox with particularly large ears, originates from North Africa and is often kept as a pet due to its cute appearance. In France, however, the possession of fennecs is strictly regulated. According to French legislation, the possession of non-domesticated animals that are not on a special list of authorized species is prohibited. To keep these animals, specific proof of competence is required, issued by the competent authorities. Violation of these rules can be punished with imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to 150,000 euros.

Despite these strict rules, the illegal trade of fennecs and other protected species thrives. In October 2025, in the Paris region, two protected wild cats, a serval and a caracal, were seized in an apartment. The owner tried to hide the animals from customs officers by throwing them out of the window. Fortunately, the animals were rescued and are now in a care center.

Such incidents are not isolated. In February 2026, a golden eagle was seized in the Jura, kept illegally. These animals are often placed in protection centers where they receive care and, when possible, are reintroduced into the wild.

French authorities have taken measures to combat this illegal trade. As part of the international operation “Thunder,” 30,000 animals were seized in 2025 across 134 countries worldwide. This operation aimed to fight the illegal trafficking of protected species and raise public awareness of this issue.

Despite these efforts, the illegal trade of protected wild animals remains a serious problem. Experts warn of the risks associated with this trade, both for the animals and for human health, as these animals can transmit diseases. Furthermore, their captivity can lead to behavioral disorders. It is therefore important that the public is informed about the legal provisions and dangers related to illegal trading.
