Paris – 28/05/2026: France is currently hit by an exceptional heat wave recording record temperatures for the season. In several regions, including Paris, temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius were measured on Wednesday, a particularly high figure for the month of May. These extreme peaks have already caused seven deaths, mainly among the elderly and those with pre-existing health problems.
The national meteorological institute Météo-France has issued an orange heatwave alert for many departments, including the capital. This alert is in effect until early Friday morning. Authorities strongly recommend that the population stay in the shade or in air-conditioned rooms during the hottest hours of the day, drink enough fluids, and avoid any physical exertion. It is also advised to pay particular attention to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
The government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, is facing increasing criticism regarding the management of the crisis. Despite an emergency crisis meeting convened during which a “resistance plan until September” was presented, opposition parties and environmental associations criticize a reaction considered late. Marine Tondelier, president of the ecological party “The Ecologists,” demands more ambitious measures in the face of the increase in extreme weather phenomena, notably the introduction of a “climate leave.” This model, already experimented with in Spain, would allow employees to benefit from up to five additional days off during particularly hot days.
Although alerts are clearly communicated, many people continue their usual activities, which increases the risk of new heat-related illnesses. The government calls on the population to take prevention recommendations seriously and to consult a doctor immediately if symptoms occur.
This current heat wave is related to the consequences of global climate change, which intensifies such extreme weather phenomena. Scientific studies warn of an increase in heat waves, whose intensity and frequency could continue to grow if no effective climate protection and adaptation measures are taken.
The coming days should see a gradual decrease in temperatures, starting with the west of France. However, the simultaneous increase in humidity could maintain a high level of heat stress for the population. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and are ready to implement additional protective measures if necessary.
These recent events highlight the importance of strengthened prevention and adaptation to climate change at all levels. Only close collaboration between politics, science, and society can increase resilience to these extreme events and limit their impacts on health and infrastructure.
The population is invited to continue to follow the current weather alerts and to adopt appropriate behavior in order to minimize health risks related to the heat.
