Landiras lives with the memory of the fires – and is better prepared

Landiras – 03.08.2026: The major forest fire that has affected large parts of Gironde between Saumos, Le Porge and the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula since 22 July is stirring painful memories in Landiras. The municipality was itself hit by a devastating fire in 2022. Four years later, it is clear how deeply evacuations, smoke and destroyed forest areas have shaped the sense of security of its roughly 2,200 residents.

The new fire situation is therefore not distant news for many people in the town. Landiras is not in the immediate operational area of the Saumos fire. But the images from the north of the department bring back experiences that continue to shape daily life in the municipality. At the same time, the 2022 disaster has led to greater attention being paid to warnings, evacuation routes and the protection of properties.

Residents report that additional equipment has been acquired and clearer procedures have been put in place or practised since then. Emergency contacts are readily available, assembly points are known, and the clearing of at-risk areas is being taken more seriously. These precautions cannot prevent a fire. However, they are intended to buy time when authorities order an evacuation or the situation worsens within a short period.

Restrictions remain in force in Gironde because of the exceptionally high wildfire risk. Access to several forest areas and sensitive natural sites has been limited. Open fires, the burning of green waste and work that could produce sparks are among the prohibited activities. Roads and cycle paths remained closed to ensure clear access for firefighters and emergency services and to prevent additional risks for visitors.

The fire in the north of the department has prompted a large-scale operation. According to the Gendarmerie, hundreds of personnel, as well as mobile units, drones and a helicopter, were deployed. An evacuation plan was also prepared for the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula, enabling a large number of people to be brought to safety within a day should the fire spread rapidly.

Smoke development is also being monitored. The Atmo Nouvelle-Aquitaine monitoring station warned of possible air pollution after the outbreak of the fire in Saumos. Such measurements are important for municipalities outside the immediate fire zone because smoke can travel over longer distances depending on wind direction.

The fires of 2022 destroyed more than 30,000 hectares of forest in Gironde and transformed entire landscapes. Landiras is now organisationally better prepared than it was then. However, the current closures, air measurements and evacuation planning show how immediate the danger remains in the region’s dry pine forests.
