Laure Lavalette demands air conditioning in all public buildings in response to the May heatwave in France

Laure Lavalette, a deputy of the National Rally from the Var department, advocated in an interview with “Les 4 Vérités” on May 28, 2026, for the implementation of widespread air conditioning in public buildings. She emphasizes that these measures aim not only to improve citizens’ comfort but above all to reduce health risks related to high temperatures.

Lavalette, who has represented the second constituency of Var since 2022, recalls previous proposals from her party leader involving similar concepts for adapting to climate change. Public institutions such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes should be equipped with air conditioners to provide protection during heatwaves. Given that these record temperature peaks are becoming more frequent due to progressive climate change, she considers these measures as part of a long-term strategy.

Meteorologists have observed for several years an increase as well as an intensification of heatwaves in France, putting elderly and health-vulnerable people particularly at risk. The May 2026 heatwave reached record levels in several regions, highlighting the urgency of protection measures.

However, this initiative also faces criticism. Its opponents point out that air conditioning requires significant investments, causes overconsumption of energy, and generates additional environmental burdens.
