U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance travels to Switzerland for talks with Iran

Zurich – 21.06.2026: U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance arrived in Zurich on Sunday morning to conduct formal negotiations with Iranian representatives regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The aim of these talks is to ease the conflict in the Middle East that has lasted for more than a year and to consolidate a fragile ceasefire intended to lay the foundations for a lasting solution. The negotiations are scheduled to last 60 days, during which a comprehensive peace agreement will be sought. Vance was accompanied by his wife Usha Vance and landed at around 6 a.m. at Emmen Air Base near Lucerne.

In addition to Vance, the U.S. delegation is led by special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. On the Iranian side, participants include parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The negotiations are taking place at the Bürgenstock Resort in the Swiss Alps, which offers a neutral and representative setting with its luxurious atmosphere and views of Lake Lucerne.

This meeting marks the first direct talks between the United States and Iran since the Islamabad summit in April 2026. The main hope is that Iran will once again allow UN inspectors access to its nuclear facilities. These had previously been targeted by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, which had worsened the conflict. The last inspection conducted by the United Nations dates back to the beginning of the war in June 2025.

Despite the willingness to negotiate, the regional situation remains tense. Israel and Hezbollah declared on Saturday that they would renew their observance of the ceasefire, a move viewed with caution due to the rapid breakdown of such agreements in the past. In addition, Iran temporarily closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz, further exacerbating tensions between the conflicting parties. U.S. President Donald Trump then threatened to impose tolls on shipping through this passage if no final peace agreement was reached within 60 days.

The international community is following these negotiations closely, as the results could have major repercussions for regional and global security. Vance and his partners emphasize the importance of constructive dialogue and a lasting agreement aimed at ending this long-standing conflict.
