Léon Marchand begins European Swimming Championships with reduced program after injury

Saint-Denis – 10.08.2026: Two years after his four Olympic victories in Paris, Léon Marchand is returning to the international stage in the French capital region. At the European Championships at the Centre Aquatique Olympique in Saint-Denis, however, his program will be considerably smaller than initially hoped. Following a muscle injury to his right adductor, the 24-year-old will compete only in the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter freestyle.

The pool events began on August 10 and will continue until August 16. For Marchand, it is his first appearance at a long-course European Championship; he had skipped the 2022 and 2024 editions. Accordingly, there is considerable public interest in his return. In France, the swimmer from Toulouse became one of the country’s best-known athletes through his performances at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The injury became apparent at the end of June during the French Championships in Saint-Étienne. Marchand initially withdrew from the 200-meter breaststroke final and subsequently cancelled his remaining starts. At the time, the French Swimming Federation announced further examinations and treatment at the national high-performance center INSEP in Paris. The now limited European Championship program is intended to reduce the workload and limit the risk of a relapse.

His withdrawal from the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley is particularly significant. Marchand holds the world record in both events, which are among the disciplines in which his versatility is most evident. He will also not compete in the 200-meter breaststroke, one of his four gold-medal events at the Paris Games, in Saint-Denis. This leaves the French team without several promising medal opportunities.

Nevertheless, his two remaining starts are sporting challenges in their own right. Marchand won Olympic gold in the 200-meter butterfly in 2024. The 400-meter freestyle, meanwhile, is one of the events on which he has recently focused his training more intensely. Before withdrawing from the French Championships due to injury, he had also won the 400-meter individual medley in 4:04.56 minutes, demonstrating his form.

For Marchand, the home European Championships are therefore less a comprehensive test for titles than a measured return to competition. His health condition sets the framework, though public expectations remain high. The selection of only two individual events follows a clear precautionary strategy: building up race workload without unnecessarily endangering the injured muscle through a packed program.
