Paris – 24 July 2026: Light-colored eyes can indeed react more sensitively to strong sunlight than dark eyes. This is not merely imagined, but neither is it a rule that applies equally to everyone. The key factor is the iris, the colored ring around the pupil. Together with the pupil, it controls how much light enters the eye.
Eye color depends largely on melanin. This pigment is generally more abundant in the front layer of the iris in brown eyes than in blue, gray, or many green eyes. Less pigment means that glare is absorbed less effectively in the eye. People affected may therefore be more likely to squint in sunlight or bright artificial lighting.
In medical terms, pronounced light sensitivity is called photophobia. This does not mean a fear of light, but rather an unpleasant to painful sensation in bright conditions. Sunlight is a common trigger, but headlights, screens, or fluorescent lamps can also be perceived as disturbing. Eye color alone, however, does not fully explain such symptoms.
Light sensitivity can have many causes. Dry eyes, inflammation of the cornea or iris, contact lens problems, migraine, and certain medications may also be responsible. Sensitivity may also temporarily increase after an eye examination involving pupil-dilating drops. In albinism in particular, it is often pronounced because of the significantly reduced pigmentation.
Light eyes therefore do not automatically mean a higher risk of eye disease or poorer vision. People with dark eyes can also suffer greatly from glare. Conversely, many people with light eyes manage everyday life without any particular discomfort. How sensitively someone reacts is influenced by several characteristics of the eye and by individual factors.
In sunny conditions, sunglasses with adequate UV protection and a cap or wide-brimmed hat can help. It is important that the glasses not only darken the view but also protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation. Contact lens wearers should ensure good lubrication if irritation occurs and should not attribute persistent symptoms solely to eye color.
New, one-sided, or very severe light sensitivity accompanied by eye pain, redness, deteriorating vision, headaches, or nausea should be medically assessed promptly. This applies especially after an injury or if symptoms begin suddenly. The rule of thumb is: Light eyes may be more sensitive to brightness, but severe symptoms are a signal that assessment is needed and are not a matter of eye color alone.
