Lewis Vassey emphasizes complete freedom of expression at the Paris Institute of Political Studies

Paris – June 17, 2026: In a recent interview with France 24, Luis Vassy, director of Sciences Po Paris, emphasized recent international challenges and the need for Europe to “at least exercise power for self-defense.” He stressed that recent campus protests supporting Gaza have not led to “limits on debate.”

Vassy, who has been leading the prestigious Sciences Po Paris since October 2024, explained that the recent international tensions, especially in the Middle East, highlight the importance of a strong and confident European foreign policy. He emphasized that Europe must “learn to exercise power, at least for self-defense” to play an important role on the global stage.

Regarding the recent protests on the Sciences Po campus centered on support for Gaza, he clearly stated that these events have not resulted in restrictions on academic freedom or open debate. He emphasized that the university is a place where different opinions are respected and discussed, not a place for suppressing dialogue.

Vassy, who once served as the Dutch ambassador, took over the leadership of Sciences Po during a period of internal tensions and challenges. Since his appointment, he has initiated multiple efforts to strengthen academic excellence and international cooperation. Under his leadership, the Paris Climate School, focusing on training decision-makers in the field of environmental transformation, was established.

Despite the challenges faced by the university, Vassy is optimistic about the future of Sciences Po Paris. He highlighted that promoting a culture of openness, dialogue, and respect-based exchange of opinions is crucial to further establishing this institution as a leading academic center.

Finally, Vassy emphasized that science and academic freedom are the foundation of democratic societies. He stated that the university is not only a place of learning but also a space that fosters critical thinking and the ability to understand and respect differing perspectives.

Overall, Luis Vassy’s interview highlights the challenges and opportunities Sciences Po Paris faces in today’s global and political environment. His strong emphasis on complete freedom of expression and the need for Europe to take on a stronger international role reflect ongoing discussions and debates shaping both academia and politics.
