The Lianna Scandal: Early Warning Signs Against Jérôme Barella in March 2026

Florence — 16.06.2026: The tragedy involving 11-year-old Lianna, who disappeared in Florence in southwestern France at the end of May 2026 and whose body was found at the beginning of June, has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of the French justice system. At the center of attention is Jérôme Barella, the main suspect in the murder case, against whom warning signs had already been recorded several months ago.

A special case was documented in March 2026: at that time, a complaint was filed with the prosecution in Auch due to “inappropriate behavior” towards another girl. Despite this report, no thorough investigation or interrogation of the accused was conducted. This inaction again raises questions about why early warning signs were ignored.

Barella first appeared in police databases in 2017 following reports of disturbing relations with a minor. In 2021, he was expelled from school due to inappropriate behavior towards a female student. However, these incidents were not forwarded to the relevant authorities, complicating further legal consequences.

In October 2022, another victim officially filed a rape complaint against Barella. Further complaints came in 2025 and early 2026. Despite substantial psychological expert reports, investigations were largely delayed, partly due to a lack of communication between the institutions involved.

The prosecution in Auch only began serious investigations in January 2026 after new reports of sexual harassment. The fact that Barella had not been interrogated before this has sparked sharp criticism from victims, their relatives, and the public.

Lianna’s family expresses deep disappointment over the negligence. Rosa, the mother of another victim, filed a lawsuit against the French state and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin because her August 2025 complaint was ignored for several months.

Amid public outrage, the government initiated two independent investigations to identify mistakes in handling the case. Gérald Darmanin publicly apologized and promised possible sanctions against those responsible. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu are calling for thorough reforms of the judicial system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The scandal has sparked large-scale protests across the country: thousands of demonstrators gathered near courts demanding fundamental changes in handling sexual violence cases and increased support for victims. Justice is under pressure to restore trust and bring perpetrators to account.

Investigations concerning the circumstances of the case and the role of the relevant authorities are ongoing. The public expects full disclosure of the truth and systemic reforms to prevent similar tragic incidents.
