Fleurance – 06/05/2026: After the disappearance of 11-year-old Lyhanna on the afternoon of May 29, 2026, in front of her collège in Fleurance, the police delivered a shocking message six days later: The girl’s body was found in an abandoned grain silo about 15 kilometers from her home. The identity was confirmed by DNA testing. The exact circumstances of death are still under investigation.
During the investigations, Jérôme B., 41 years old and father of a friend of Lyhanna, was arrested as the main suspect. The man had a previous conviction for sexual abuse of minors. Particularly alarming is that there was already a complaint against him in August 2025 for repeated rape of a minor daughter, which did not lead to his incarceration. On the day Lyhanna disappeared, Jérôme B. was seen near the school, and witnesses confirm that he was later driving with the student in his car.
On June 1, 2026, the public prosecutor filed charges of abduction and deprivation of liberty of a minor under 15 years. Jérôme B. was then taken into custody.
The case has caused nationwide outrage and raised questions about the effectiveness and responsiveness of the French justice system. President Emmanuel Macron and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin criticized bureaucratic obstacles and insufficient measures taken by authorities. In response to the tragic events, an independent investigation was launched to determine if and where failures or wrong decisions were made in handling the suspect.
The community of Fleurance is in shock. Mayor Grégory Bobbato emphasized the urgent need to improve safety measures for children and to take victims seriously at an early stage. He called for reform of protective mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Lyhanna’s family remains in deep mourning and demands consistent justice for the girl. They hope that the ongoing investigations will shed light on the events and hold the perpetrators fully accountable.
The Lyhanna case has sparked a broad public debate on the protection of minors and the handling of repeat offenders in the justice system. Specialists and representatives from children’s rights organizations are calling for psychological support and better coordination between law enforcement and social services to protect vulnerable children early.
The investigations are not yet concluded. Authorities emphasize that further findings should help to clarify not only the circumstances of Lyhanna’s tragic death but also to eliminate systemic weaknesses in the protection of minors.
