When Emmanuel Macron personally intervened in Kylian Mbappé’s future in spring 2022, it was no longer just about a spectacular football transfer. At the Élysée Palace, the world champion was regarded as much more than an exceptional striker: he was seen as a symbol of French excellence, a flagship of national sports, and a personality with considerable influence far beyond the boundaries of football. Several reports and later statements from those involved suggest that Macron viewed Mbappé as a kind of strategic asset for France – almost as a national cultural treasure that should not be lost to foreign countries.
At the time, the development seemed already predetermined. Mbappé’s contract with the French top club Paris Saint-Germain was expiring, and nearly the entire international sports press assumed that his transfer to Real Madrid was imminent. In Spain, his arrival was already treated as a done deal. Many observers saw Mbappé as the natural successor to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as a defining figure of world football.
Behind the scenes, however, an unusual political dimension developed. Macron decided to become active himself. The French president later publicly confirmed that he had held discussions with Mbappé before the final decision. In doing so, he advised the player to continue his career in France initially. Macron justified his intervention by asserting that it is the duty of a head of state to represent the country’s interests when a person of such significance faces a pivotal decision.
The conversations apparently left an impression. Mbappé later reported in several interviews that Macron had made it unmistakably clear that he wished for him to remain in France. The president not only referred to the player’s sporting importance but also to his role in the country’s international reputation and the attractiveness of the French league. Mbappé himself admitted that the words of a head of state naturally carry special weight.
The extraordinary mobilization by the Élysée Palace can be explained by the context at the time. France was preparing for several major international events, including the Olympic Games in Paris. At the same time, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar was approaching, whose sovereign wealth fund is the owner of Paris Saint-Germain. The departure of the best-known French footballer would have had not only sporting but also symbolic impacts. Macron, who has been deeply interested in the economic and social significance of sports for years, recognized Mbappé’s importance for the international perception of French football.
According to the player, the president’s intervention was more than a simple appeal to stay. Rather, he argued that a move abroad could still be possible later. The core message was: Real Madrid would still exist in a few years, but France needed its star now. This patriotic approach apparently struck a chord with Mbappé, who has always placed great value on his identity as a French player and whose career is closely linked to the Paris region.
However, it would be reductive to credit the decision solely to Macron’s influence. Equally important were the negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain, the sporting prospects within the club, and the extraordinary financial conditions of the new contract. Mbappé himself emphasized several times that many people were involved in his decision-making process. Nevertheless, he confirmed that the French president was among the voices whose opinion he took seriously.
The staging of his contract extension in May 2022 highlighted the political and symbolic dimension of the process. Before thousands of spectators, Mbappé announced his stay in Paris and spoke of his connection to his hometown and to France. The choice of words sounded remarkably statesmanlike and differed from the usual declarations at contract renewals in professional football.
Looking back, the episode appears as an exceptional moment at the intersection of sports, politics, and national identity. Although he ultimately did transfer to Madrid, the events of 2022 show the significance Mbappé had for France at that time. It is rare in recent European sports history for a head of state to intervene so directly in the future of a single athlete.
The case also illustrates a shift in the perception of elite sports. World stars like Kylian Mbappé are no longer viewed solely as athletes today. They serve as ambassadors for their countries, influence the international image of entire nations, and possess economic as well as cultural significance that reaches far beyond the playing field. For Macron, Mbappé embodied exactly this new generation of global sports icons. His staying in Paris was therefore not just a matter of football but also one of national prestige.
