Macron seeks to pool donations for rebuilding the Fontainebleau Forest

Noisy-sur-Ecole – 16 July 2026: President Emmanuel Macron has announced a coordinated national fundraising campaign for reconstruction following the devastating forest fires in the Fontainebleau massif. During a visit to the scene in the south of the Seine-et-Marne department, he indicated that private donations for restoring the forest would be coordinated through a central contact point. The fire began near Noisy-sur-Ecole on 12 July and spread rapidly.

According to information available so far, around 2,050 hectares of vegetation were affected. This corresponds to approximately ten percent of the area of the Fontainebleau Forest, the largest contiguous woodland area in the Ile-de-France region. The fire is under control, but firefighting operations and the securing of affected areas will continue, according to emergency services. The assessment makes clear the scale of the task beyond immediate disaster relief.

Macron’s initiative aims to channel the willingness of private individuals, companies, associations and local authorities to donate into structured restoration projects. In political terms, the president is thus drawing on the model of the major national fundraising campaign following the Notre-Dame fire in 2019. Unlike a building, however, Fontainebleau is not a matter of reconstruction according to a fixed plan, but of a long-term ecological process.

The Seine-et-Marne Departmental Council is already participating in an exceptional fundraising campaign by the Fondation du patrimoine. According to the council, the funds are intended to finance replanting and projects that increase the forest’s resilience to drought, heat and future fires. The tree species, areas and methods selected will be crucial to the credibility of the fundraising campaign. Forestry renewal cannot be limited to quickly planting as many trees as possible.

The response to the fire tied up substantial security and emergency resources. Since 12 July, the Gendarmerie has deployed around one hundred officers in the affected area to support evacuations, keep access routes clear for firefighters and secure restricted zones. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had already visited the scene on 13 July. Several hundred firefighters from different regions were mobilized to fight the blaze.

The state response therefore combines three levels: immediate risk prevention, the criminal investigation into the causes of the fire, and the long-term restoration of a forest of cultural and natural significance. For the government, the disaster is also an indication of the growing pressure on French forests from heatwaves and drought. Macron warned in Fontainebleau of a difficult remainder of the summer.

Whether the central fundraising campaign quickly builds trust will also depend on clear rules for its management. The existing involvement of the Fondation du patrimoine and the department provides an institutional basis for this. The political benefit of the announcement lies above all in directing the diverse offers of assistance towards a transparent reconstruction plan, rather than allowing them to dissipate in individual local initiatives.
