Mayor of Ales Taken to Safety After Threats: The Long Fight Against the DZ Mafia

Ales – 21.07.2026: During the night, it became too dangerous for Christophe Rivenq. The mayor of Ales in the Gard department was removed from his home by officers from the RAID police unit following new threats. The move came after several days of rising tension: threats had been posted at his home, and the local politician also received a letter containing two 9-millimeter rounds.

According to consistent media reports, the messages bore the name DZ Mafia. Investigators must still determine whether the threats actually came from members of this criminal group. For Rivenq and his family, however, the situation represented an immediate disruption. When intimidation reaches the private space of an elected city leader, it is no longer solely about the safety of one individual.

Ales has been fighting drug trafficking for years. The city is not at the center of Marseille, the DZ Mafia’s original area of operation, but this very expansion is causing concern among authorities. Groups presenting themselves under a well-known name can use local helpers, dealers or violence-prone young perpetrators without all those involved having to follow a fixed chain of command.

This is precisely one of the challenges for police and the justice system. According to findings from major investigations, the DZ Mafia is not considered a traditional, strictly hierarchical mafia. Its structures are fluid, and its contacts extend through prisons, digital communications and shifting local networks. Arresting suspected leaders can increase pressure, but does not necessarily bring operations at drug-selling locations to an immediate halt.

The scale of the security authorities’ response was demonstrated in March by Operation Octopus. More than 1,000 gendarmes took part, and 43 suspects were arrested at the time. Investigators focused not only on people outside prisons, but also on suspected supporters and key figures in the network. Such cases are complex because financial flows, communications, weapons and individual acts of violence must be legally linked in a way that can stand up in court.

The current case is therefore also an attack on the municipal office itself. Politicians from across the political spectrum expressed their support for Rivenq. The investigation into the threats is ongoing, and possible perpetrators have not yet been publicly identified. For Ales, a visible police presence remains important. In the long term, the crucial question will be whether authorities can s쳮d not only in arresting individual suspects, but also in permanently striking at the economic and human foundations of drug trafficking.
