Major fire in Maine-et-Loire: 283 hectares destroyed, festival evacuated

Maine-et-Loire – 12 July 2026: A vegetation fire affected at least 283 hectares in the Maine-et-Loire department on Sunday evening, according to emergency services. At the time of publication, the fire had not yet been completely extinguished. Around 200 firefighters, divided into eight forest fire response groups, were battling the flames, while smoke spread through the surrounding area and access routes had to remain clear for emergency services.

The figures show how quickly a fire can spread through dried-out vegetation. Two homes were affected and damaged by the flames. No information was initially available about possible injuries or whether the buildings could continue to be inhabited. For the affected residents, this marks the beginning of a night marked by uncertainty, insurance questions, and concern over what remains of their homes.

A high-voltage power line was also damaged. The consequences for the electricity supply and work on the grid remained unknown in the evening. During such operations, firefighters, the grid operator, and security forces must coordinate closely: firefighting operations near electrical installations are particularly risky, while the fire must not be allowed to spread along embankments and dry areas.

A festival was evacuated as a precaution. Visitors left the site to keep routes clear for emergency services and prevent anyone from being exposed to smoke, flying sparks, or a possible change in wind direction. No reliable figures had initially been released regarding the number of people evacuated or the continuation of the event. According to available information, the evacuation proceeded calmly.

Firefighters deployed a major operation involving eight groups specializing in vegetation fires. These units are prepared to fight flame fronts in wooded areas, fields, and scrubland while protecting homes and infrastructure. Water reserves, terrain accessibility, and continuous assessment of the situation are crucial, as wind and heat can change the direction of a fire in a very short time.

The fire occurred in the department during a period of increased forest and vegetation fire risk. The Maine-et-Loire prefecture had already ordered protective measures and restrictions on activities posing a particularly high fire risk due to dry vegetation and high temperatures. The current operation shows that this danger has long ceased to affect only the regions traditionally hit by forest fires in southern France.
