Major Fire in Roma Settlement in Nantes: Around Ten Hectares Affected

Nantes – 21 July 2026: A major fire broke out late on the afternoon of Monday, 20 July, in a settlement inhabited by Roma people in the Prairie de Mauves area of Nantes. The Loire-Atlantique departmental fire service deployed for a large-scale operation. According to the information published so far, the fire affected an area of around ten hectares. Its spread was brought under control.

Due to the proximity of residential buildings, emergency services ordered precautionary evacuations. Around 50 households in the surrounding area had to leave their homes temporarily. Initial reports contained no information about injuries. There was also initially no confirmed information about the cause of the fire. Authorities are likely to examine this issue once the acute response phase has ended.

Prairie de Mauves is located in eastern Nantes, in an area with transport routes, commercial sites and other used land. The location of the fire made protective measures for local residents necessary. The evacuations were intended to protect people from smoke, possible spreading flames and other dangers in the immediate vicinity.

The incident occurred during a tense period of heightened fire risk in Loire-Atlantique. Due to dry conditions, the city of Nantes had banned the use of barbecues in parks and public green spaces from 8 through 26 July. However, this general precautionary measure has no confirmed connection to the fire in Prairie de Mauves.

The department’s prefecture had also repeatedly warned of the risk of vegetation fires in recent weeks. High temperatures and dry vegetation can contribute to fires spreading rapidly. During the operation in Nantes, securing the surrounding area and coordinating evacuations were therefore crucial alongside firefighting efforts.

The affected settlement is home to Roma families. As the situation is further assessed, it will be important to determine whether accommodation was damaged and what support the affected residents need. As of Tuesday morning, there was still no final, officially confirmed information about possible damage to buildings or the duration of the evacuation.

For people in the surrounding area, the key priority remains following the instructions of the fire service and authorities. After a fire of this scale, the smell of smoke, smouldering hotspots and restrictions in the area may persist for some time.
