Major Fire in the Foret de Fontainebleau: Around 800 Hectares Affected

Fontainebleau – 13/07/2026: A large-scale forest fire in the Foret de Fontainebleau southeast of Paris had engulfed around 800 hectares by shortly after midnight. The Seine-et-Marne fire service has classified the blaze as exceptionally large and difficult to contain. The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and spread rapidly through the extensive forest area.

According to operational reports, nearly 400 firefighters have been mobilized. Two firefighting aircraft were dispatched to support the region. Their deployment in the Paris region is considered unusual, as such resources are normally used primarily in particularly high-risk areas in southern France. Air operations had to be suspended after nightfall.

During the night, firefighting efforts focused on protecting settlements, transport routes and particularly vulnerable sections of forest. Authorities also ordered a partial closure of the A6 motorway, which connects Paris with Lyon and the south of the country. This means considerable disruption to holiday traffic on one of France’s most important north-south routes.

There were initially no confirmed reports overnight of injuries, evacuations or destroyed buildings. The cause of the fire was also initially unknown. The incident command continued ground operations while preparing to resume air support at daylight. The situation remained tense in the early hours of Monday morning because the fire could continue to spread.

The Foret de Fontainebleau is one of the most significant forest areas in the Ile-de-France region and lies around 60 kilometers southeast of the capital. The area is heavily visited for its natural and recreational spaces and is crossed by major transport corridors, including the A6 and railway lines. A fire of this scale therefore places a strain on both the natural environment and regional infrastructure.

France is already experiencing a particularly early and intense wildfire season this summer. According to the Interior Ministry, around 17,000 hectares nationwide had already been affected by fires by mid-July. High temperatures, dry vegetation and low humidity increase the risk of fires rapidly growing in size and requiring prolonged firefighting operations.

Authorities advise the public to strictly observe closures and not enter the affected forest areas. Motorists should check their routes in the Fontainebleau area and follow the instructions of emergency personnel. Further developments will depend on weather conditions, the fire’s spread during the morning hours and the effectiveness of intensified firefighting efforts.
