Major fire on the border of Hérault and Aude: 900 hectares scorched – Evacuations and massive firefighting operation

Pouzols-Minervois – 03.07.2026: Since the night of July 2, a large-scale vegetation fire has affected the border area between the departments of Hérault and Aude. According to consistent reports, around 900 hectares of garrigue and forest burned. Strong, sustained winds and weeks of persistent dryness drove the flames forward quickly and made the work of ground and aerial crews difficult.

Official sources say several hundred firefighters from both departments and regional units were deployed; reports speak of 800 to 900 personnel. They were supported by water-dropping aircraft, including Canadair planes, as well as several firefighting helicopters. Additionally deployed units helped secure flanks and slow the spread. The incident command reported that the forward fire line could be held at times, while hotspots and active flanks continued to require attention. One firefighter was slightly injured, according to media reports.

As a precaution, residents in affected areas were temporarily evacuated. Roads near the fire zone were closed at times to facilitate emergency and supply vehicles. Municipalities set up emergency shelters and coordinated support services, especially for people with special protection needs. Authorities appealed to the public to strictly avoid cordoned-off areas and follow the instructions of emergency personnel.

Experts see the rapid spread as the result of a risky triad: very dry vegetation, high temperatures and strong wind. Météo-France had already indicated an elevated vegetation fire risk for the south. Under such conditions, wind-borne embers and fire jumps favor new ignition points, even at a considerable distance from the main fire. The tactics of the response teams therefore combined ground assaults, the creation of firebreaks and precise water drops along the flanks to prevent breakthroughs.

Under the national solidarity plan for wildfires, additional resources were mobilized from more northern departments. The prefectures coordinated situation assessments with the departmental fire services and the civil protection authorities. On the morning of July 3 the situation remained tense; parts of the front were considered stabilized, but a re-ignition with freshening winds could not be ruled out. Investigations into the cause of the fire have been launched, but remain secondary to the priority of containment and protecting the population.

The events have renewed the debate over prevention, management of vegetation areas and the prepositioning of firefighting resources in particularly exposed regions. At the same time, awareness campaigns about behaviour during drought periods and local protection concepts are coming into focus, to detect future fires early and limit them more quickly.
