Manhunt after Explosion in Monaco: Businessman of Ukrainian Origin and Family Injured

Monaco – 01.07.2026: Two days after an explosion in a residential building near the French border, the search for the alleged perpetrator continues. According to authorities, the detonation occurred on 29.06.2026 at around 9 p.m. Three people were injured, including a wealthy businessman of Ukrainian origin and two relatives. The injured were treated in hospitals in Nice; according to consistent media reports, two of them are seriously injured. Officials, out of consideration for those affected, made no further statements about identities or health status.

Investigators in Monaco currently believe that a prepared package contained the explosive device. Video recordings from the area are said to show a man who places a package and then flees on foot in the direction of the adjacent French commune. The public prosecutor’s office in Monaco immediately opened proceedings; forensic services are securing traces at the scene and matching them with information from France.

French authorities confirmed that the public prosecutor’s office in Nice opened an investigative procedure to provide support. Additional controls have been set up along the access routes between Monaco, Beausoleil and the surrounding communities. According to official statements, the search is focusing on the border area, while footage from private and municipal cameras is being evaluated. Authorities ask witnesses who made suspicious observations on the evening of June 29 to come forward.

The incident has not been classified as a terrorist case so far. According to investigators, the examination is focused on a targeted attack. Possible personal or business motives as well as any international links of the businessman are being examined. Such comparisons, for example with previous proceedings or sanctions registers, are carried out by the competent judicial and police authorities. Official confirmations of concrete suspicions are not yet available.

Residents described a heavy shockwave and falling debris. The affected building was cordoned off, specialists examined the structural integrity and secured evidence. For the surrounding houses, emergency services ordered short-term evacuations; most residents were able to return in the meantime. Authorities emphasized that there is no apparent acute danger to the public, but urged restraint in spreading unconfirmed information.

Cooperation between Monaco and France is considered routine in such situations: in Monaco the Sûreté publique and the judicial authorities are responsible, on the French side the public prosecutor’s office in Nice and specialized investigative services are coordinating. Both sides reaffirmed that they will deploy all available resources to identify and arrest the suspect. They did not share concrete indications of his whereabouts up to Wednesday noon.
