Man Dies After Lightning Strike at Workshop in Dolomieu

Dolomieu – 19/07/2026: During the night, as severe thunderstorms moved across parts of the region, a workshop caught fire in Dolomieu. A 38-year-old man died in the incident. According to initial findings, the building on Route de Bordenoud was struck by lightning shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 16.

The fire engulfed a former chapel no longer used as a church, which housed a metalworking business. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was already ablaze, according to local media reports. Entering the interior was initially not possible. The man was later found dead in the burned-out building.

More than 50 firefighters with around 27 vehicles were deployed to contain the fire and protect the neighborhood. According to sources close to the operation, materials and gas cylinders stored inside the building complicated firefighting efforts. Several fire hoses were deployed primarily to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring homes.

The identity of the deceased was not publicly disclosed. According to reports carried by franceinfo and regional media, he was the operator of the business. Whether he died while attempting to extinguish the fire himself has not been conclusively confirmed by authorities. As of Sunday, no detailed information had been provided by the relevant judicial authorities regarding a possible investigation.

The incident occurred during a severe thunderstorm system that affected large parts of eastern and central France on July 16. Authorities had warned of thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, strong gusts and intense lightning activity in parts of the region. Other municipalities in the Isere department also reported property damage and hail damage.

Firefighters in Dolomieu therefore faced a dual task: fighting an industrial fire under difficult conditions while securing the surroundings of a business located close to residential homes. For the small municipality, the aftermath of the stormy night is above all a fatality that demonstrates the force of a weather event capable of escalating within minutes.

Initial reports link the cause of the fire to the lightning strike. However, final findings, including those concerning the building’s technical safety measures or the precise sequence of events inside the workshop, are still pending. For the relatives and colleagues of the deceased, such clarification is unlikely to change the immediate loss.
