Paris – June 23, 2026: Marc Bloch, a leading historian of the 20th century and a hero of the Resistance, was today grandly welcomed to the Pantheon alongside his wife Simone Vidal. This honor celebrates both his intellectual legacy and his courageous resistance against Nazi Germany.
Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential magazine “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, such as “Feudal Society” and “Strange Defeat,” had a profound impact on the study of history.
During World War II, Bloch actively participated in the Resistance movement against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy regime’s police and endured severe torture while imprisoned, yet he divulged no information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.
To commemorate his induction into the Pantheon, a documentary film titled “Marc Bloch, au nom de la France” was released. Written and directed by Hugues Nancy, the film sheds light on the extraordinary lives and dedication of Marc Bloch and his wife Simone Vidal. Utilizing extensive archival materials such as photographs, diaries, and manuscripts, it weaves the story of this remarkable couple.
Marc Bloch’s family initially expressed concerns about the political use of his legacy. They emphasized the importance of purely civic recognition and wished for broad academic participation in the ceremony. Their wish was respected, and the far-right party National Rally did not attend the ceremony.
The induction of Marc Bloch and Simone Vidal into the Pantheon is a significant event that honors the values of the Republic and recalls their dedication to freedom and justice. It reaffirms the importance of historical memory and respect for those who fought for democracy.
Those interested can visit the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” at the Pantheon from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. This exhibition offers an in-depth look at the life and achievements of this outstanding historian.
Today’s ceremony was presided over by President Emmanuel Macron, who highlighted the significance of Marc Bloch’s contribution to French history and culture. He stated that Bloch should be honored for his achievements, teachings, and bravery.
The induction of Marc Bloch and Simone Vidal into the Pantheon appropriately celebrates their extraordinary lives and contributions to French history, reminding us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
