Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal inducted into the Panthéon

Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, an important historian of the 20th century and hero of the Resistance, was solemnly inducted into the Pantheon today together with his wife Simonne Vidal. This honor crowns both his intellectual legacy and his courageous resistance against National Socialism.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale”. His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite”, have had a lasting impact on the science of history.

During the Second World War, Bloch was actively involved in the resistance against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy police and brutally tortured in captivity. Despite severe abuse, he did not divulge any information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.

On the occasion of his induction into the Pantheon, a documentary was released titled “Marc Bloch, au nom de la France”. This film, written and directed by Hugues Nancy, highlights the exceptional life and commitment of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal. The film uses rich archival material, including photos, diaries, and manuscripts, to tell the story of this remarkable couple.

Marc Bloch’s family initially had concerns about political instrumentalization of his legacy. They emphasized the importance of a purely civil recognition and wished broad participation of the academic community in the ceremony. These wishes were respected, and the event took place without the participation of the far-right Rassemblement National.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Pantheon is an important event that honors the values of the Republic and recalls the commitment to freedom and justice. It underscores the importance of remembering history and recognizing those who have fought for democracy.

For those interested, the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” will be on display at the Pantheon from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It offers an in-depth insight into the life and work of this distinguished historian.

Today’s ceremony was led by President Emmanuel Macron, who emphasized Marc Bloch’s significance for French history and culture. He stated that Bloch is honored for his work, his teaching, and his courage.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Pantheon is a worthy sign of recognition for their exceptional life and contribution to French history. It reminds us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
