Paris – 23.06.2026: Marc Bloch, a major historian of the 20th century and Resistance hero, was solemnly admitted to the Pantheon today along with his wife Simonne Vidal. This distinction honors both his intellectual legacy and his courageous resistance against Nazism.
Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern history and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” have deeply influenced the historical discipline.
During World War II, Bloch actively engaged in the resistance against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy police and brutally tortured in custody. Despite the abuse, he did not betray any information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.
On the occasion of his entry into the Pantheon, a documentary titled “Marc Bloch, in the Name of France” was released. This film, written and directed by Hugues Nancy, highlights the remarkable life and commitment of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal. It uses rich archival material, including photographs, diaries, and manuscripts, to tell the story of this exceptional couple.
Marc Bloch’s family had initially expressed reservations about the potential political instrumentalization of his legacy. They emphasized the importance of strictly civil recognition and wished for broad participation of the academic community at the ceremony. These wishes were respected, and the event took place without the presence of the far-right National Rally.
The admission of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal to the Pantheon is a major event that honors the values of the Republic and recalls the commitment to freedom and justice. It underlines the importance of historical memory and recognition of the fighters for democracy.
For those interested, the exhibition “Marc Bloch, the Spirit of History” will be on display at the Pantheon from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It offers an in-depth immersion into the life and work of this great historian.
Today’s ceremony was presided over by Emmanuel Macron, who emphasized Marc Bloch’s importance for French history and culture. He stressed the honor given to his work, his teaching, and his courage.
The entry of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Pantheon is a fitting mark of recognition for their exceptional lives and their contribution to the history of France. It reminds us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
