The ceremony at the Panthéon, led by French President Emmanuel Macron, included musical performances, theatrical readings, and honors from numerous figures from culture and politics. In his speech, Macron emphasized the importance of Bloch’s intellectual integrity and his steadfast resistance against fascism and antisemitism.
The Bloch family had requested in advance that the celebrations be carried out without any religious or nationalistic elements to focus the tribute on its civil significance. This was respected and contributed to a solemn yet sober atmosphere.
As the first historian to be inducted into the Panthéon, Marc Bloch sends a clear signal about the importance of scientific integrity and democratic engagement in France. His seminal works such as “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite” continue to shape academic historiography today.
Blochs’ induction into the Panthéon honors not only his scholarly achievements but also his courage and sacrifice in the fight against the Nazi occupation. The state thereby highlights values such as resistance, sincerity, and education that are fundamental to the Republic.
Numerous citizens gathered in front of the Panthéon to participate in the celebrations and pay respects to Bloch’s legacy. With standing ovations, they accompanied the solemn carrying in of the memorial plaques for Bloch and his wife.
The Marc Bloch family appeared deeply moved and emphasized the importance of continuing to preserve and keep alive the principles and values of their relative. The honor is also a call to uphold education, the will to resist, and the search for truth in today’s society.
